A Thousand Beautiful Faces
The culmination of nearly two years of work, this film short was an attempt to recall the excitement and energy of a particular era; one which, unbeknownst to everyone at the time, would prove to be a critical point in human history. Neither I, nor any of the other faces on the dance floor, could have predicted what would happen to all of us when HIV joined the dance.
Twenty five years later, in my work as an AIDS activist, I witnessed the devastating effects of those earlier times in the lives and stories of the people I served who were living with HIV. I learned that many of them, particularly the gay men who comprised a large portion of the community, felt a profound longing and nostalgia for those days, as did I. Some had lost many or most of their friends, lovers and partners over the years. Some had survivor guilt. Some looked back on the freedom and decadence of those earlier times and did not live in regret. And some, like myself, were humbled to be a witness to it all, and felt a deep need to honor those times.
